Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • understand the structure of an atom and the main types of chemical bonding
  • describe trends in the periodic table
  • comprehend general concepts of chemistry
  • name compounds according to rules of nomenclature
  • balance simple chemical equations
  • differentiate between different acid / base concepts
  • explain physical states and their properties
  • define electrochemical processes (voltage generation, electrolysis, fuel cells)
  • understand and apply corrosion protection from an electrochemical point of view
  • derive basic properties of organic compounds based on their structures
  • explain the functionality / production of lubricants and soaps
  • transfer chemical concepts to engineering and daily-life related problems
