2022W, LU, 4.0h, 4.0EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 4.0
  • Credits: 4.0
  • Type: LU Laboratory Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to perform experiments around a research reactor in the fields of neutron flux, reactivity and reactor period as well as to explain the origin of Xenon poisoning and to describe reactivity effects.

Subject of course

Totally 12 experiments are carried out in groups of maximal 4 students:

  1. Thermal flux
  2. Fast flux
  3. Void coefficient
  4. Danger coefficient
  5. Reactivity
  6. Cross section
  7. Critical experiment
  8. Rod calibration
  9. Subcritical multiplication
  10. Reactivity values of fuel rods
  11. Power calibration
  12. Transient operation up to 250 MW

Teaching methods

During the laboratory tutorial students operate experiments (activation of foils, measurements of radioactive samples,…) and furthermore calculate the results based on tables.
