This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2014S, PR, 8.0h, 10.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 8.0
  • Credits: 10.0
  • Type: PR Project

Aim of course

This project work will teach techniques of lasers, laser stabilisation and feedback, atomic transitions and spectroscopy. You will learn about quantum mechanical effects as well as fundamental lab techniques.

Subject of course

Physical quantities such as length, time, mass, voltage are more and more defined based on quantum mechanical effects. This makes quantum mechanics increasingly important in metrology and consumer technology (GPS system). This project work will investigate the link between basic physics systems like atomic transitions, optical cavities, oscillating cirquits to definitions of time and distance. We will build various test experiments to develop "quantum based" time standards.
