This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2015W, PR, 4.0h, 4.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 4.0
  • Credits: 4.0
  • Type: PR Project

Aim of course

The practical exercises should allow the students to investigate basic phenomena of quantum mechanics in the laboratory.

Six basic experiments will be performaed in small groups (1-3 students), one afternoon each, starting at 14:00.

The setups are available every two weeks, Mo, Wed., Fri.

DATES will be published soon.

Have a look at the timetable (download area).

In total six eperiments have to be performed.

!!!! Registration via mail to Prof. Rauschenbeutel (Arno.Rauschenbeutel@ati.ac.at) !!!!

Subject of course

There are 8 experimental setups available:

Entangled photons and Bell's inequality, Inteference of two photons, Optical resonators, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Laserspectroscopy of Rubidium, Quantum noise, Neutron interferometry, HeNe laser

Manuals can be downloaded from TISS.

Additional information

Manuals can be downloaded from TISS.

Setup description and planned experiments will be send to you by mail after registration.

!!! WATCH OUT: Manual for quantum noise will be send by mail !!!

Literature

Some remarks concerning the downloads below:

Bell experiment + 2-photon experiment: The physics behind these experiments is treated in detail in the lecture "Quantum optics II" by Arno Rauschenbeutel.

Especially questions like "Why does the Bell experiment disprove local realism" can not be answered without a little bit of math.

In case you did not have a chance to follow the lecture, you can find a short argumentation (By Stefanie Barz, Uni Wien) and Bell's original paper in the download documents.

Noise fundamentals experiment: The manual for "noise fundamentals" will be send to you by mail for copyright reasons.

Contact Prof. Thorsten Schumm (thorsten.schumm@tuwien.ac.at).

Previous knowledge

At least Physik II, ideally Quantum Mechanics.
