Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and describe the basic properties of superconductors. From their knowledge of the main theoretcal descriptions they know about the limits of the effect in temperature, magnetic field and transport current. They understand the problems of current transport in technological superconductors. They also are aware of the quantum state of superconductivity and the resulting possibilities for applications. All of this enables them to use specialized literature in that field and start into corresponding scientific research.

Subject of course

1. Introduction 2. BCS Theory 3. New Developments in theory 4. Basic experiments 5. Supeconductors in magnetic fields 6. Hysteresis in type II superconductors 7. Applications

Examination modalities

During an oral examination we check the knowledge about the basic theories of superconductivity (thermodynamics, London Theory, Josephson Effect, BCS, Ginzburg-Landau) as well as the corresponding experimental findings. Special attention is paid to the current transport in type-II superconductors and resulting possibilities for applications.
