Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • describe basic physics of diagnostic x-ray procedures
  • explain x-ray detection and detector technologies
  • describe the basics of medical image processing, advantages and disadvantages of common algorithms as well as processing artefacts
  • apply and interprete the concept of detective quantum efficiency (DQE) and modulation transfer function (MTF)
  • define and use generator ond detector settings of x-ray facilities to the extent of using x-ray equipment for a thesis, e.g.

Subject of course

  • Principles of medical imaging physics and instrumentation, x-ray imaging physics
  • Production and characteristics of x-ray radiation used in medical diagnostic imaging, x-ray interactions
  • Detector technologies and detector physics, mathematical description of detector and resulting image properties
  • Principles of diagnostic x-ray dosimetry 

Teaching methods

Lecture with interactive elements. Possibility to produce digital x-ray images to verify what you have lerned in the lessons on our Deptartment's x-ray system

Held at Vienna Medical University, Währinger Gürtel 18-20, level 4; lecture room of the Center for Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering. Monday afternoon 14.00-15.30 starting March 2 2020. No lecures on March 16, and May 4
