The students get a detailed insight on nuclear power related questions such as design, operation, safety aspects and material requirements of different nuclear power plant designs. Three major NPP accidents (Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima) are presented in detail and situation in Europe after Fukushima is discussed. Finally future reactors desings such as "Generation IV" NPPs as well as Small Modular Reactors are presented
The course gives a survey on the current design of nuclear power plants, such as PWR, BWR,WWER, CANDU, Magnox, AGR, HTR, LMFBR, GEN 3+ and Gen 4 NPPs, Small Modular NPPs. Further the safety aspects and major nuclear accidents in the past (such as Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, Fukushima) and the situation in Europe after Fukushima are disussed. For each reactor type specific safety and operational aspects are discussed.
