After successful completion of the course, students are able to comprehend and to actively communicate the contents of the lecture which are the basic measurement techniques for magnetic materials as well as fundamental theoretical models as e.g. exchange interactions, molecular field models of antiferro-, ferri- and ferromagnetism, as well as the Stoner-Wohlfarth model of itinerant magnetism and Landau theory of second order ferromagnetic phase transitions (extended with magneto-volume-coupling), and to apply these theoretical models to specific experimental results obtained from magnetic measurements.
Overview of magnetic phenomena: Dia- and paramagnetism, Curie Weiss law: Magnetic measurements: Faraday balance, induction methods, SQUID: Spontaneous ordered systems mean field approximation ferro- ferri- and antiferromagnetism: Crystal field effects in rare earth magnetic materials; Band magnetism, Stoner Wohlfarth model, Landau theory for 2dn order phase transitions; Anisotropy, relativistic effects; microscopic measurement techniques (using neutrons and muons); functional magnets and material sustainability
Chapters are explained by means of powerpoint presentations and supplementary lecture notes and finally discussed with the students.
