After successful completion of the course, students are able to carry out independent scientific research projects in the field of theoretical solid state physics as well as computational (materials) physics.
Electronic structure theories are at the heart of computational materials science and theoretical solid state physics. This project work serves as a preparation for a master thesis and is closely related to current research projects that aim at further developing the computational efficiency and accuracy of electronic structure theories that can be used to solve the many-electron Schrödinger equation for real materials. Possible research projects include the computational study of pressure-temperature phase diagrams of solids, chemical reactions on surfaces or the implementation of many-electron theories for simplified model systems.
Introduction to developing and applying scientific software packages for performing electronic structure theory calculations of solids and simplified model systems.
The employed methods and obtained results need to be presented in a written report.
