Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able

  • to apply finite and infinitesimal Lorentz transformations,
  • to analyze Maxwell equations and their solutions in relativistic formulations,
  • to use Lagrange- and Hamilton formalisms for fields,
  • to set up and solve Euler-Lagrangian equations of motion for relativistic particles and fields,
  • to apply the Hamilton formalism with contraints,
  • to derive Noether currents from symmetries of the Lagrangian,
  • to derive theories resulting from spontaneous symmetry breaking and
  • to calculate the radiation and absorption properties of matter.

Subject of course

Application and illustration of the material offered in the lecture "Electrodynamics II" using exercises and application examples.

Teaching methods

Students are given lecture-related and advanced exercises. They prepare and upload them independently within a week and then present their solutions on the blackboard in front of the group.

Additional information

All relevant documents and information will appear on TUWEL. The mode of the LVA will also be explained on TUWEL.

The course will be conducted in usual presence mode, the first exercise will take place on 12.10.22. The tutorials take place on Wednesdays, at 12:15 - 13:45

The crosses should be entered on TUWEL by 8 a.m. on the day of the tutorial at the latest, please also upload the written exercises (as PDF) by 12 p.m. on TUWEL. In the exercise classes, students are asked to explain their solutions on the blackboard based on the exercises they have marked with a cross. There will be a discard result "Streichresultat" where the exercise with the lowest points will not count towards the final mark.

As an exception, there will be a plenary exercise class without compulsory attendance on Friday, October 7th, at 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. in HS 6, which serves to repeat the special theory of relativity. The recording will be made available on TUWEL.

In addition, there is again the possibility to use the professional mode "Berufstätigenmodus". Please send an e-mail to Kirill Boguslavski with a detailed justification why you have to choose this mode. In this mode, there is no obligation to attend the exercise classes. However, there will be conversations with the lecturer to account for the missed blackboard presentations. Similar to the usual exercise classes, any crossed exercise can be asked to be presented.
