After successful completion of the course, students are able to comprehend the sujects presented in the lecture and to draw conclusions from them as well as to actively communicate the contents presented during the lecture.

In the last years, microscopy concepts have been developed which allow for optical resolution below the classical diffraction limit. This practical course will introduce one of these methods, single molecule switching microscopy (acronyms are PALM, STORM, dSTORM, fPALM): single molecules are stochastically switched on and off, and the positions of all detected molecules are determined to an accuracy of ~20nm by mathematical fitting. If requested students can bring and characterize their own samples; alternatively, fluorescently labeled cells will be used as examples.
