Subject of course

1st Block:            Acting on Insight - Tips for Developing and Optimizing ScientificApplications

Date and Time:    March 24, 2017, 08:45 - 17:00
Location:              TU Wien, FH Internet-Raum FH2 (TU Wien, Wiedner Hauptstraße 8-10, second floor, yellow area)
Lecturer:               Florent Lebeau (Allinea Software, now part of ARM, Warwick, UK)

Details and Registration see: http://vsc.ac.at/training/2017/Allinea

Abstract:
Today's ever advancing technology platforms offer huge potential for completing faster and more advanced work but missing the vital warning signs of inefficient code behaviour will hinder your performance at any scale. Allinea tools are designed to help you get to the root causes of system crashes and bottlenecks quickly and in this training we will provide hands-on user advice for developing more robust code efficiently at VSC. The session will also demonstrate the use of the tools for getting the most out of the VSC cluster by easily identifying your biggest priorities for optimization across commonly occurring crash, memory and workload balance issues.

2nd Block:           Introduction to Working on the VSC-3 Cluster

Date and Time:     April 27, 2017, 08:45 - 13:00
Location:               TU Wien, FH Internet-Raum FH2 (TU Wien, Wiedner Hauptstraße 8-10, second floor, yellow area)
Lecturers:              VSC Team (Claudia Blaas-Schenner, Bernhard Hermann, Siegfried Höfinger, Dieter Kvasnicka,
Balazs Lengyel, Irene Reichl, Siegfried Reinwald, Markus Stöhr, Jan Zabloudil)

Details and Registration see: http://vsc.ac.at/training/2017/VSC-Intro-Apr

Abstract:
In this half-day course we will help you getting started on the VSC-3 cluster, Austria's most powerful supercomputer. With running and developing software on a supercomputer there are many similarities and fewer but crucial differences compared to your desktop PC. Focusing on hands-on teaching throughout the course, you will immediately try out what you've heard and adapt it to your own needs. This course is set up both for absolute beginners, i.e., users who have never used a compute cluster before, and users, who are just new to VSC-3 and do already have some experience with other clusters.

3rd Block:            Parallelization with MPI

Date and Time:     May  09 - 11, 2017, 09:00 - 16:30 (11.05. until 16:00)
Location:               TU Wien, FH Internet-Raum FH1 (TU Wien, Wiedner Hauptstraße 8-10, ground floor, red area)
Lecturers:              Claudia Blaas-Schenner and Irene Reichl (VSC Team,  TU Wien)

Details and Registration see: http://vsc.ac.at/training/2017/MPI

Abstract:
On clusters and distributed memory architectures, parallel programming with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the dominating programming model. In this 3 days course parallel programming with MPI is taught starting from a beginners level. Hands-on sessions (in C and Fortran) will allow users to immediately test and understand the basic constructs of the Message Passing Interface (MPI).
This 3 days course teaches parallel programming with MPI starting from a beginners level.

4th Block:           Shared memory parallelization with OpenMP

Date and Time:   June 08 - 09, 2017, 09:00 - 16:40
Location:             TU Wien, FH Internet-Raum FH1 (TU Wien, Wiedner Hauptstraße 8-10, ground floor, red area)
Lecturer:              Lukas Einkemmer (lectures+practicals; Department of Mathematics, University of Innsbruck)
Claudia Blaas-Schenner and Irene Reichl (practicals only; VSC Team, TU Wien)

Details and Registration see: http://vsc.ac.at/training/2017/OpenMP

Abstract:
The focus of this 2 days course is on shared memory parallelization with OpenMP for dual-core, multi-core, shared memory, and ccNUMA platforms. This course teaches OpenMP starting from a beginners level. Hands-on sessions (in C and Fortran) will allow users to immediately test and understand the OpenMP directives, environment variables, and library routines. Race-condition debugging tools are also presented.
