Extension of condensed matter physics to surfaces; fundamental principles for technologically relevant processes on solid surfaces (corrosion, heterogeneous catalysis). Understanding of macroscopic surfaces properties, based on phenomena and processes at the microscopic (atomic) scale.
Description of solid surfaces; chemical, crystallographic, and electronic structure of surfaces; thermodynamics; crystallography; adsorption and desorption of molecules; principles of surface spectroscopy.
