Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to comprehend the sujects presented in the lecture and to draw conclusions from them as well as to actively communicate the contents presented during the lecture.

Subject of course

SONAR orientation sense of bat and dolphin; importance of SONAR for the U-Boot localisation in world war II;
Ultrasound location and imaging : Sonic cameras, acoustic source location,  echo  and transmission location; Basics of echo-location: Ultrasound beam forming, echo-puls shaping and chirping;  NDT (non-destructive material testing) using Ultrasound ; Diagnostic Ultrasound (Sonography) including A- B- and 3D modes, Doppler, harmonic imaging, elastography and Ultrasound microscopy; Qaulity assurance in medical ultrasound;
Sono-luminiscence; Ultrasonic separation of suspended particles: Highlights of the European Training and Mobility Network UltraSonoSep: Acoustic bio-cell filters; Ultrasonic emulsion splitting (http://www.iap.tuwien.ac.at/www/euss);
Therapeutic ultrasound: Heat Treatment; Lithotripsy, Sonothrombolysis; Sonoporation.

Teaching methods

The VU essentially contains two partsi.e. the basic lecture and questions to be answered and elaborated by by the students infront of the lectureres and the fellow students.

The relevant questions are published at the end of each main chapter.Simpler questions may be grouped more complex and elaborate question may give a task in themselves.  Those students who want to get points for the practical part should elaborate answers to these tasks and send them to the respective lecturer at least 24h befor his next lecture. (This will be possible either in specially published forums or at the internet-adress of the relevant lecturer. Details will be established with the students during the first lecture).
