Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...describe the structure of an atom, to explain the formation of atomic spectra, to solve the Schrödinger equation for simple potentials (box, oscillator, ... ) up to the Coulomb potential of a hydrogen atom; to apply the laws underlying the structure of the periodic system of elements; to explain the origin of X-rays, the structure of the atomic nucleus, the causes of radioactivity, the functioning of nuclear fission a dnfusion reactors and to summarize the basic elements of radiation protection.

Subject of course

Introductionary lecture for physics students: Atoms, molecules and solids: Development and basic concepts of quantum physics, structure of atoms, atomic spectra, laser, Schrödinger equation for simple systems, atoms with more than one electron, periodic system of the elements, inner shell processes, X-ray emission, molecules, nucleus, radioactivity, nuclear fission and fusion, etc.

Teaching methods

Teaching the basics of quantum, atomic and nuclear physics through oral lectures and experimental demonstration experiments.
