Subject of course

After successful completion of the course, students are able to comprehend the sujects presented in the lecture and to draw conclusions from them as well as to actively communicate the contents presented during the lecture Be familiar with different sound level calculations and be able to calculate traffic noise examples. To have an overview of different factors influencing the propagation of sound over the ground and in the atmosphere and to know their realization in different sound propagation models. Be aware of possible hearing loss due to excessive music consumption. The aim is to get an acoustic basic knowledge for possible work in an engineering office or at an authority. After clarifying the basics with sound field parameters, A-weighted sound pressure level and one-dimensional sound propagation, the sound propagation of point-source sound sources is calculated analytically and the propagation of area-shaped sound sources is shown. Examples from the area of traffic noise are calculated. The basics and models for the numerical sound propagation programs are also clarified. The calculation principles for noise reduction by noise barriers are explained, the causes of tire noise are discussed and the possibilities of noise reducing road surfaces are presented. The effects of the ground and the meteorological effects on the sound propagation are discussed in detail. The sound insulation of components is exemplified, the basics of room acoustics are clarified and the reverberation time, as an essential room acoustical description variable, is calculated for a room. The acoustic signal processing in the ear is shown. Hearing impairment and worker noise limits are also part of the lecture, such as the sound level measurement and the determination of the noise level of the students by headphones. The structure-borne sound propagation, active noise control and the acoustic camera are rather briefly addressed. At the end the visit of the acoustic test rooms at the TGM takes place, whereby the different measurements become even more understandable and a standing wave is acoustically experienced. .

There is a written examination, in which acoustic examples are solved by calculation. The oral examination takes place on the same day, during which the understanding of the information provided is checked.
