Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply basic theoretical concpets for the understanding of ordered solids and its surfaces, like symmetry properties, bandstructure, density-of-states, electron-electron interaction, to simple problems.

Subject of course

Introduction into basic concepts of ordered solids and surfaces. Basic concepts of symmetry (real space, reciprocal space) 2 dim. and 3. dim. boundary conditions (Floquet-, Bloch-Theorem) Electronic structure: band-structure, density-of-states Overview of commonly used electronic structure methods: from empirical to first-principles treatment of electron-electron interactions. Examples for "real" solids and surfaces.
