Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply basic concepts for the understanding of electronic spectra of solids and its surfaces, like symmetry properties, selection rules, transition probabiliies, to simple problems.

Subject of course

Quantum mechanical foundations. Interaction matter - radiation. Transition probabilities and selection rules. Basic concepts and implications of symmetry. Examples: Photoelectron spectroscopy angle integrated (XPS) and angle resolved (UPS) band mapping, "experimental" band-structure. calculation and interpretation of spectra. Auger and X-ray emission (absorption) Tunnelling spectroscopy Infrared and Raman spectroscopy (adsorbates) Energy loss spectroscopy (adsorbates)
