Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply the basic principles of statistical physics also for the description of interacting systems, such as real gases or magnetic systems, and to understand and model phase transitions and non-equilibrium processes in terms of simple approximation techniques. In the accompanying voluntary exercises and additional plena the students will learn to independently solve various problems in statistical physics using also more involved analytic methods and computer simulations.

transport theory (Boltzmann eq.), stochastic processes (Langevin eq.), linear response theory, magnetism, theory of phase transitions

Teaching methods

Lecture with strong and active students participation through questions and votings, accompanied non-mandatory tutorial during which lecture relevant problems are independently solved and presented on the board.

Written and oral

Additional information

The lecture is held in close cooperation with the Statistische Physik II Übung. The students are invited to attend the combined lecture-exercise classes. However, both courses can also be taken independent of each other.

Examination modalities

2 alternative exam options:

a) "VO-Modus": one written exam at the end of the semester on the content of the lecture. (Replacement test in October and additonal oral exams until two years after the end of the course).

b) "VU-Modus": Joint grading with the exercise course "UE 136.050 Statistical Physics II: written exam at the end of the semester including material covered in the interactive tutor-based exercise classes (every week either lecture or exersice classes); (replacement test in October, no further oral exams). If VU-Modus is selected physical presence in the VO is mandatory.
