Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to name optical materials, understand and calculate simple ray paths, analyse fundamental imaging laws, derive imaging aberrations and their correction, formulate the influence of apertures and categorize the basic types of optical devices. In addition, they can explain the areas of application of light microscopy with special consideration of the diffraction-limited limits of resolution.

Subject of course

Students can name optical materials and, based on this, calculate simple ray paths by applying the sign system commonly used in industry.

They analyze the fundamental imaging laws using planar or spherical surfaces as well as lenses and multi-stage lens systems.

Furthermore, they are able to derive the aberrations of an optical system and their correction as well as to formulate the influence of the ray bundle limiting by aperture stops.

Building on this basic knowledge, students are able to discuss the basic types of optical devices (magnifying glass, telescope, microscope).

In particular, they are able to visualize the optics of the microscope on the basis of Abbe's theory (wave-optical imaging/diffraction).

Teaching methods

All teaching content is explained in the lecture notes, and after each chapter there is a calculation of exercise examples.

Under TUWEL there are completely calculated exercises with solutions for each chapter.

During the lecture, the lecturer makes intensive use of the free calculation programs QIOPTIQ WINLENS 3D Basic and Free PreDesigner. Students can download these programs from www.winlens.de and are thus able to understand the lecture content visually.

Depending on availability, one lecture unit consists of a person working in the optical industry giving a lecture on the current state of optical calculation and development and making the lecture available as a PPT.

Students will be able to comprehend small optical devices from the lecturer's private collection:

Loose individual lenses and prisms, lenses in mounts, magnifying glass, eyepiece, telescope, opera glass, photo camera, etc.
