Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the basic principles of defining coordinate systems and coordinate frames.

In addition they are able to perform coordinate transformations between global earth-fixed coordinate frames and projections into the plane.

Subject of course

The lecture deals with plane, 2D+Height and real 3D-Coordinate Systems commonly used in Geodesy. Transformation algorithms between these cartesian, spherical and plane coordinates as well as simple map projections are major topics. Finally the hierarchy of coordinate systems (global, regional, local) will be discussed intensively.

Teaching methods

The lecture is based on the contents of the associated lecture notes.
