Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: UE Exercise

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to process and model geophysical data corresponding to the methods: electrical resistivity tomography, ground penetrating radar and refraction seismic tomography. The students will learn to implement their own Matlab/Python scripts for the visualization of the raw-data and imaging results. The students will use standard software for the modeling of geophysical signatures

Subject of course

  • Introduction to Physical concepts in Electrical and Electromagnetic prospection
  • Electrical properties of the subsurface
  • Electrical resistivity Tomography (ERT)
  • Induced Polarization (IP)
  • Low-induction number electromagnetic mapping
  • Ground Penetrating Radar
  • Seismic refraction Tomography

Teaching methods

Working in small groups. Development of scripts in Python/Matlab for the visualization of raw data and imaging results. Use of commercial software and research algorithms for the modeling of physical signatures. Short presentation of results for interactive discussion with the lecturer and the rest of the students.
