Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

1)      plan and conduct geophysical surveys with standard methods applied in engineering and environmental investigations

2)      evaluate the quality of the measurements as well as pre-process the data for the inversion

Subject of course

This lecture introduces the basis of the geophysical mrthods relevant for the practical application in engineering and environmental investigations, namely:

  • Electrical methods: Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and Electrical resistivity Tomography ERT)
  • Electromagnetic (EM) methods: low-induction number EM imaging (EMI), transient electromagnetic (TEM)
  • Refraction Seismic Tomography (RST)

Teaching methods

  • Practical experience on the realization of geophysical methods and conduction of field procedures under the supervision with experts on the field.
  • Hands-on learning on the use of modern geophysical instruments and handling of the data on the field
  • Self-organization and management in small teams for the efficient and successful conduction of geophysical measurements and the corresponding coordinates with geodetical methods
  • Self-management for the preparation of field protocols (with schematic representations of field geometries) as well as back-up and organization of the data for further processing and inversion
  • Use of python routines  for the visualization of the data and the evaluation of data quality
