Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.5
  • Type: VO Lecture

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

1) apply standard geophysical methods commonly used in engineering and environmental investigations.

2) design geophysical surveys for enviromental studies

3) evaluate data quality in geophysical imaging measurements

Subject of course

  • Introduction to Physical concepts in Electrical and Electromagnetic prospection
  • Electrical properties of the subsurface
  • Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT)
  • Induced Polarization (IP)
  • Low-induction number electromagnetic mapping
  • Transient electromagnetic (TEM)
  • Ground Penetrating Radar
  • Seismic refraction Tomography

Teaching methods

Formal lecture of theoretical principles

Discussion with the students on the application of theoretical concepts

The slides reviewed in class are distributed to the students before each lecture. The distributed material also provides a series of questions which are the basis of the exam at the end of the semester.
