  • Credits: 1.5
  • Type: EX Excursion

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the workflows at a geodetic fundamental station. They are able to explain how the space geodetic techniques in Wettzell work (VLBI, SLR/LLR, DORIS, GNSS) and how they are connected to finally come up with a combined terrestrial reference frame.

Subject of course

Visiting the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell, which runs all geometric space geodetic techniques: VLBI, SLR/LLR, DORIS, and GNSS, as well as other instruments such as a ringlaser or gravimeters.

Teaching methods

Excursion to the fundamental station Wettzell

Additional information

Update: Even if you successfully registered by email, please wait with the booking of the train tickets if you have not done so yet. I cannot foresee whether the excursion can really take place.

Update: The ICE29 starts at Passau (and not in Plattling and earlier as originally scheduled). Thus, the bus will bring us from Wettzell to the railway station Passau. If you already booked a ticket from Plattling and cannot get on the train in Passau, please tell Johannes Böhm as soon as possible.

The excursion will take place on May 25, 2020 (Monday). Meeting point is the railway station in Plattling/Germany (at 10 am). There will be a bus to bring us to Wettzell. Since most of the participants will take the ICE 228 from Vienna, we will wait for this train if it is delayed.

After an introduction from 11 to 12 am, we will have lunch (snacks) at the station. From 1 to 4:00 pm, we will have a guided tour at the instruments. At 4:00 pm, we will go back by bus to the railway station in Plattling where we will arrive before 6:29 pm (in time for the ICE 29).

Everybody is responsible on his/her own for the travel to Plattling and from Passua. The costs for the bus and lunch are covered by TU Wien.
