After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

• judge the performance of SQL-queries for spatial databases;
• discuss pros and cons of different project management models with respect to the implementation of a GIS;
• define important design patterns in OOP and provide a rationale for selecting one of these based on a given problem;
• normalize databases and estimate the trade-off between normalization and performance;
• name and describe the principles of the user-centered design of UIs;
• discuss the requirements engineering process.

All topics covered in this lecture are concerned with advanced theoretical and practical aspects of implementing a GIS. This includes (but is not neccessesarily restricted to):

• advanced methods of performance tuning spatial databases;
• knowledge about how to construct advanced PostGIS queries;
• an overview of processes involved in software engineering projects;
• important object-oriented design patterns for GIS;
• requirements engineering methods with a special focus on Human-Computer Interaction.
