Aim of course

  • Fundamental understanding of the main concepts for encoding, transmission and display of information for the world wide web, with a special focus on applications in cartography and geovisualization.
  • Skills to independently design and implement basic web pages and online maps based on different base technologies (HTML/CSS, SVG, JavaScript mapping APIs, ...)
  • Creation and adaption of cartographic and topical content for rendering in online mapping systems.

  • Encoding of Text, Data and Documents for the Web
  • Introduction to base technologies for web maps: HTML, CSS, SVG, Mapping APIs
  • Geodata for web mapping: formats and standards
  • Outlook on current and future developments

Examination modalities

Students will do 2 practical assignments and 1 final group project which are graded with points. For each group there will be one oral hand-in examination appointment to verify that all group members contributed to the solution. The overall grade is based on the total points for the assignments and hand-in examination.
