Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to undertand the basic terminology and concepts in remote sensing. The studens are able to select useful sensor system, and applicable datasets, in order derive geophysical variables and combine them. In the course of the practical exercises, they get hand-on experience with typical software environments and data management. Furthermore, they are able to create and communicate classifaction results, supported by common classification quality metrics and statistics.

ATTENTION: This course is held in GERMAN! - Typical tasks of remote sensing should be understood, commencing with the problem statements, the selection of appropriate data and eventually the correct and successful solution. The theory and the practical execution should be understood as equally important issues.

Subject of course

With basic knowledge in remote sensing and in image processing simple practial tasks of remote sensing can be carried out, starting in the planing phase and leading to a proper solution. Some tasks will be presented, consideration regarding appropriate data will be made and eventually methods for solving the problem will be discussed. Demonstrations and practical exercises are complementing the theory so that students should be capable of carrying out basic tasks successfully.

Teaching methods

  • Remote sensing data aquisition & management
  • Data selection, preprocessing & athmospheric/topographic correction
  • Derivation of geophysical variables & classification
  • Analysis and discussion of results
  • ESA Sentinel Toolbox, QGIS, jupyter notebooks

Examination modalities

There are three practical exercises to be done in this VU, which are perfomed in groups. The results must be composed in reports and presented orally in group interviews after handing in the report. The grading is inferred to equal parts from the quality of the report, the results, and the oral performance during the interviews. The interviews deal with the actual work in the exercises, the employed methods, as well as with the understanding of the underlying theory.

Registration modalities

The practical exercises will be carried out in small groups. Registration into a group is not required, since groups will be built as a concrete practical commences. Please note: the number of participants had to be limited, because software used in the course of the practicals needs licence keys which are available only in limited numbers. Thus, for reasons of fairness register only if you are honestly willing to participate.
