Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to preapre a short scientific paper (e.g., extended abstract) to present the application of geophysical methods to solve an engineering, hydrogeological or environmental problem in urban areas. The student will also be able to identify the drawbacks and possibilities from different geophysical methods applied in urban settlements.

Subject of course

We will review in this lecture current research projects where geophysical methods are applied in urban environments or towards the protection of infrastructure. In particular, we will review the application of electrical (electrical resistivity tomogrpahy and induced polarization imaging), electromagnetic (low induction number and transient electromagnetic) and near-surface seismic (refraction and surface waves), as well as gravimetry or seismology.

Teaching methods

This lecture is given as a "lunch seminar", where a short presentation (15 - 20 minutes) is presented followed by a group discussion (20-25 minutes). The topic correspond to the application of a given geophysical method to address one environmental or engineering problem in uraben settlements or decent developments in geophysical methods that can improve our understanding of the subsurface in urban areas.

Examination modalities

The students need to prepare a 3-pages extended abstract regarding the application of a given geophysical method to solve a problem associated to urban environments. The material need to be summarized in a short presentation (5minutes) within the lecture. The extended abstract should contain at least 5 references to international Journal papers or textbooks. The extended abstract and presentation can be given in either English or German.
