Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the link between electrical properties of the subsurface relevant environmental, hydrogeological and geological processes. The students are able to identify the advantages and drawbacks of the different electrical and electromagnetic geophysical methods, as required to design and conduct a geophysical survey.

Subject of course

  • The electrical properties of rocks and soils
  • Electrical conduction mechanisms in the subsurface
  • Electrical Double Layer
  • Induced Polarization imaging: mechanisms, survey design and interpretation
  • Transient Electromagnetic sounding: application and interpretation
  • Data-error characterization and Inversion

Teaching methods

  • The lecture is given as "Hybrid", where the student can attend the classroom or attend to the lecture online through gotomeeting.
  • A script for the lecture is made available in TUWEL, which consist of the slides used in each lecture.
  • The slides and other relevant material are available for the students before each lecture.
  • Discussion with the students on the application of theoretical concepts
  • Short exercises
  • Review of short papers
  • A two questions quiz in TUWEL after each lecture , which can be used to accumulate points to obtain a positive grade as an alternative to a final exam.

Mode of examination

Written

Additional information
