Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.0
  • Credits: 1.0
  • Type: VO Lecture

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • provide an overview of important current research on navigation/wayfinding;
  • design, plan and conduct a HCI-experiment using a mobile GIS as well as analyzing the resulting data;
  • explain the core principles of ethics in conducting HCI research;
  • reflect on the cons of using ad-hoc surveys in empirical research.

Subject of course

This lecture focuses on empirical methods for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) based on the example of mobile geographic information systems. This includes (but is not neccessesarily restricted to):

  • an overview about major research questions regarding wayfinding/navigation (support) of pedestrians;
  • an essential understanding of the design, planning (e.g. apriori power analysis) and conducting empirical research;
  • basic knowledge about the theory and practice of development and use of surveys;
  • data analysis skills for HCI studies;
  • research ethics in HCI experiments.
