Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: UE Exercise
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply the physical concepts reviewed in class to solve common engineering questions. The students will be able to localize earthquake´s epicenter and quantify its magnitude. During the revision of potential methods, the students are encouraged to develop scripts in Matlab and Python so that they can gain experience in the implementation of physical equations in a programming framework.

Subject of course

  • Seismology
  • Gravitational field
  • Geomagnetic field
  • Spontaneous potential
  • Propagation and attenuation of electromagnetic waves

Teaching methods

  • The exercise is given as "Hybrid", where the student can attend the classroom or attend to the lecture online through Zoom. A video of the description of the exercise will be also made available in the TU peer TUBE platform.
  • Tutorials of the exercise are planned primarily online, but there will be tutors on-site to help answering questions regarding the use of Python or implementation of particular features.
  • Following a short description of the tasks, the exercise should be solved in small teams of 2-3 students, or individually.
  • The implementation of Python scripts and jupyter notebooksto solve basic tasks in geophysics such as the modeling of signatures in potential methods, namely: Gravimetry, Magnetometry and Spontaneous Potential
  • The use of Python software for the localization of earthquake's epicenter, or the digital analysis of data
  • The exercise is evaluated by the grading of reports
  • Working in python and jupyter notebooks

Mode of examination

Immanent
