Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the theoretical principles and field of application of Geophysics, as well as the profile and tasks of a geophysicist. The students are able to explain how Geophysics combines mathematics, physics and geology to characterize Earth´s processes, structure and composition. By the end of the lecture, the students can apply geophysical methods based on natural sources, - seismology, magnetometry, gravimetry, spontaneous potential and magnetotelluric - to understand natural phenomena, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, groundwater flow and mass movements.

  • Basic concepts for Geophysics
  • Seismology and the structure of the Earth
  • Gravitational field and the shape of the Earth
  • Geomagnetic field
  • Electric and Electromagnetic fields

Teaching methods

  • The lecture is given as "Hybrid", where the student can attend the classroom or attend to the lecture online through Zoom.
  • A video of thelecture will be also made available in the TU peer TUBE platform.
  • A script for the lecture weill be made available in TUWEL, which consist of the slides used in each lecture. The slides and other relevant material are available for the students before each lecture.
  • Discussion with the students on the application of theoretical concepts
  • Short exercises
  • Review of short papers
