After successful completion of the course, students are able to:
- perform a simple field classification of rock types,
- assign material properties, origin and conditions of formation (P/T or environmental) to a rock,
- read a geological map and to interpret it in three dimensions (draw a profile).
- structure and composition of the Earth, in particular of the lithospheric plates,
- plate tectonics as origin of rock formation,
- characterisation of the three main lithologies: magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks,
- weathering and erosion, soil, hydrogeological aspects of selected rocks,
- interpreting geological maps.
According to "blended learning" the lecture will be split in a theoretical online part and a practical part which you will have attend in person.
# During October till early November the Power Point slides will be uploaded as pdf's supplemented by audio-files.
# Reading of geological maps and drawing of a geological profile will be discussed using a hands-on approach. Rock specimens will be provided for direct observation during these sessions.
The use of Sem DA grün 02B is allowed for up to 18 participants, there is actually no need to split in groups.
You are therefore invited to attend in person on the following dates:
10.11.2020
17.11.2020
24.11.2020.
The examination deals with all discussed chapters. Questions have to be answered by writing keywords or by drawing diagrams.
Bonus points can be added for the individually drawn geological profile.
