Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: UE Exercise
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to process and invert electrical, transient electromagnetic and seismic tomographic data using to-date algorithms. The processing and inversion  work with open-source libraries to permit the development of tools that they can use in their professional career.

Subject of course

Processing of real data from diverse geophysical methods: Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Induced Polarization (IP) imaging, Transient Electromagnetic (TEM), and Seismic Refraction Tomography (SRT),

  • Understanding engineering problems and planning of geophysical surveys
  • Conduction of geophysical surveys
  • Processing and inversion of the data
  • Interpretation

Teaching methods

  • The exercise is blocked and given as "Hybrid", where the student can take a place in the classroom or attend to the lecture online through gotomeeting.
  • A video of the description of the exercise will be also made available in the TU peer TUBE platform.
  • Tutorials of the exercise are planned primarily online, but there will be tutors on-site to help answering questions regarding the use of Python or implementation of particular features.Presentations from the students

  • OPTIONAL: we offer a day of field work where the students can collect the data that will be discussed during the lecture

  • Following a short description of the tasks, the exercise should be solved in small teams of 2-3 students, or individually.
  • Use of Python libraries for the processing and inversion of the data
  • Presentation and discussion of the results

Mode of examination

Oral

Additional information

A field survey is planed on October 16th at Mannswörth for the collection of data to be discussed in the lecture (attendance is optional)

A computer is required with following requirements:

Python 3.5.x, 3.6.x

Windows 7,8, 10 or Linux - (both cases with 64 bits)

Examination modalities

The students should work in small teams (2-3 students each), where they process the data. At the end of the lecture the students present their results and interpretation. Following the lecture, the audience (given by the classmates and teams of the Geophysics Research Division) pose questions, which the presenters should answer using their own analyses and materials available from the theoretical lecture. The evaluation is based on the presentation of the students and the ability to answer the questions from the audience.
