This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2019W, VO, 2.0h, 2.5EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.5
  • Type: VO Lecture

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the link between electrical properties of the subsurface relevant environmental, hydrogeological and biogeochemical processes. To this end, the students will get into details of the different electrical and electromagnetic method, as required to better identify their advantages and disadvantages as well as to design a geophysical survey. Based on the revision of to date literature, the student will review the recent methodologies for the collection, modeling and interpretation of electrical and electromagnetic methods.

Subject of course

  • The electrical properties of rocks and soils
  • Electrical conduction mechanisms in the subsurface
  • Electrical Double Layer
  • Induced Polarization imaging: mechanisms, survey design and interpretation
  • Transient Electromagnetic sounding: application and interpretation
  • Data-error characterization and Inversion
  • Biogeophysics: an emerging discipline

Teaching methods
