After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop and apply forward and inverse models to retrieve geophysical variables from Earth Observation data and calibrate and validate the models using different reference datasets.
This exercise is split into three parts:
1) Forward modelling of backscatter using a Water Cloud Model,
2) Retrieval of Surface Soil Moisture from backscatter observations,
3) Evaluation and uncertainty assessment of surface soil moisture retrieval.
The methods in this exercise are as follows:
1. Develoment, calibration and validation of models with a program of the students own choice, e.g. Python, MatLab, Microsoft Excel.
2. Presentation of mehtods and results in two scientific reports.
3. Presentation of mehtods and results in a scientific presentation.
The first meeting for this practical course will be held after the theoretical course on 16 March 2021.
Practicals do not take place every week. Please, note announcements of lecturers. Attandence is mandatory.
The final presentations will be held online on 1 June 2021.
The performance of the students is assessed via a scientific report and a scientific presentation which will be held online.
A script is provided in the lecture Parameter Retrieval from Earth Observation (120.034)
