120.019 Earth Rotation and Global Dynamic Processes
This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2024W, UE, 1.0h, 1.5EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.0
  • Credits: 1.5
  • Type: UE Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to compute the transformation between the celestial and terrestrial reference frame, to split up polar motion into pro- and retrograde parts by means of two-sided spectra, to work with tidal potential catalogues and to calculate the effects of geophysical processes (mass changes, particle motion) on Earth rotation.

Subject of course

Transition between celestial and terrestrial reference systems, spectral analysis of Earth orientation parameters, free & forced polar motion, modeling of Earth rotation variations associated with dynamical processes in atmosphere and oceans.

Teaching methods

Independent completion of four exercises (with Matlab) in groups of two or three (individual work is also possible) after prior explanation in the exercise. The results of the exercises will be discussed with the instructor in a submission meeting. The exercise usually does not take place every week, but every second/third week.

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

Please note: 10:30-12:00 is the time of the room reservation!

The time of the exercise is 10:45-11:30!

The first exercise with the issue of the first assignment will take place on 15.10.2024. Three further dates will follow, presumably 3 weeks apart.

Examination modalities

  • Submission of the completed exercises via a TUWEL course.
  • Active participation in the submission meeting.
  • Partial performances in written form: 4 protocols for the exercises.
  • Partial performances oral: 4 submission meetings.
  • All protocols must be handed in to pass the exercise.
  • Since the assignments are partial performances that have to be completed over a longer period of time (2-3 weeks are available for the completion and preparation of the report), there is no possibility of repeating this partial performance.
  • Participation in the submission meetings is obligatory (however, a single excused absence of individual group members is possible).
  • If the entire group is unable to attend the submission meeting, an alternative date can be arranged.
