## Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

• explain, demonstrate and analyse basic deterministic and stochastic models for the spread of directly transmitted or vector-transmitted infections,
• explain the epidemiological concept of the basic reproduction number, to calculate this number and use it in models,
• calculate and express the effect of vaccination and other measures to eliminate infection from a population, and
• outline the ideas and methods used to prove the central theorems.
