Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to: explain clearly concepts from probability and statistics, evaluate various quantities for probability distributions and random variables, perform statistical computations, and implement this in the statistical program R.

Subject of course

Classical point estimation (parametric and non-parametric methods), confidence estimation, statistical tests, linear models.

Computation, simulation, and visualization using R will be used throughout the course.

Teaching methods

This course is an introductory statistics course. The focus is on methods and tools of descriptive and inferential statistics, core concepts of probability theory and implementation of the statistical analysis methods.

Exercises will involve solving problems and the use of R for computation, simulation and visualization. You will need to bring your laptop during these sessions and to have installed R Studio on your computer. You will not be expected to use R to do any advance computer programming. No previous knowledge of R is necessary, the necessary learning outcomes for R are achieved within the framework of the VO and UE. The R software can be downloaded from the CRAN website
