Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • Recognize and interpret mathematical constructs such as scalar and cross products, curve and range integrals.
  • Apply and adapt methods and concepts for the calculation of examples of the subject areas from the teaching content.
  • To use sentences and methods for the calculation of typical examples from the presented topics, to modify and apply them for the specific task.
  • To establish relationships with the topics of physics courses.
  • To draw mathematically sound conclusions in the thematic areas instead of carrying out lengthy calculations.

  • Scalar and vector fields, curves, curve integrals
  • Parameter integrals and integrals in higher dimensions on restricted and unrestricted areas

Teaching methods

Panel presentation for an introduction to the facts and presentation of mathematical concepts, sentences, as well as calculation and solution methods. Simple examples support the introduction, and concentrated plenary exercises help to deepen the issues. Regular written tests during the semester provide feedback to students about the understanding and skills of using the material handled.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, a concentrated block introduction to mathematical methods is held, which prepares students in a compact form for an introduction to the applied courses Fundamentals of Physics and Practical Mathematics. This basic knowledge from the school will be refreshed and expanded sufficiently to be able to follow the mentioned courses. This introductory block will conclude with a mandatory test. Thereafter, Practical Mathematics begins in the regular timetable.
The Practical Mathematics focuses on computational and solution methods and aims to provide students with the mathematical foundations necessary for understanding the basics of physics. Content overlapping with Analysis I and Linear Algebra occur and are also desired. The rigorous mathematical treatment in all theoretical details will take over these lectures.
