After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and apply the hp-version of the finite element method. They know the advantages compared to the standard h-fem and know the techniques used in analyzing such algorithms.
In this lecture, the hp version of the finite element method will be introduced. Compared to the more standard h-fem, this method increases the accuracy by not only refining the underlying grid, but also by increasing the polynomial degree used for the ansatz-space.
The lecture will first focus on 1d problems, where the algorithms will be introduced, and a detailed approximation thory is developed. We then showcae what happens at higher dimensions by analyzing the 2d Poisson problem in more detail.
More advanced topics will be discussed depending on the interest if the audience.
Lecture in the blackboard
The date and time of the lecture will be fixed in the first session.
Lecture notes will be created during the lecture and be made available for download.
Oral Exam
Not necessary
Knowledge of Numerics and the basics of partial differential equations are necessary. Knowledge on finite element mehtoda is useful but not crucial.
