After successful completion of the course, students are able to underststand various modelling approaches with deterministic (and stochastic) differential equations. They will understand formal as well as partly also rigorous derivations of kinetic equations from the microscopic level, as well as macroscopic (fluid-dynamic) equations from the kinetic level. Additionally, they will gain some basic knowledge in the concepts and methods of kinetic theory.
- Modelling with deterministic and stochastic differential equations: Micro-meso- and macroscopic scales
- Introduction to kinetic theory
- The Boltzmann equation
- The concept of hypocoercivity
- Formal and partly rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from microscopic models and from the Boltzmann equation to fluid-dynamic equations
