  • explain how to derive and mathematically prove a-posteriori error estimates for elliptic PDEs
  • formulate the idea of adaptive mesh-refinement
  • state convergence and optimality of adaptive algorithms
  • write a Bachelor or Master thesis in this field

  • Introduction to the finite element method (FEM)
  • a-posteriori error estimation for elliptic partial differential equations
  • local mesh-refinement by newest vertex bisection
  • adaptive algorithms for driving an automatic local mesh-refinement
  • convergence of adaptive algorithms
  • optimal convergence rates and optimal computational complexity
