Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to formulate and solve (shape) optimisation problems with partial differential equations. Students are able to solve optimisation problem analytically as well as numerically.

Subject of course

We discuss optimisation problems with PDE constraints. More precisely we will discuss optimal control as well as shape optimisation problems and develop numerical  as well as theoretical solution methods. Applications of optimisation problems are manifold and can be, e.g., car and air craft design, optimal control of industrial plants, or optimisation of biological models. Also electic engines and noninvasive medical treatment of patients can be improved by optimisation techniques.

Teaching methods

Students work on projects, which contain theoretical as well as theoretical problems. The projects will be presented by the students at the end of the semester.

Mode of examination

Written and oral
