Properties

  • Semester hours: 5.0
  • Credits: 7.5
  • Type: PR Project

Aim of course

Ability to solve a task from a specific application by means of mathematical methods especially by using modelling and simulation.

Subject of course

A typical problem from an application area such as automatic control, robotics, medical or environmental sciences is used as means for performing the way "Problem formulation - formal model - mathematical model - transformation for deriving a solution by use of a computer - programming and computation - interpretation and documentation - problem solution". Special emphasis is put on observing the underlying mathematics. At the same time, an introduction to software tools for modelling and simulation is provided. Students can choose their example problem from a series of tasks belonging to various areas of application and will solve their problem either individually or working in a group (depending on the amount of work connected with the chosen problem). The necessary computations (simulations) will be performed by commercially available software such as MATLAB for continuous processes orMicroSaint resp. ARENA for discrete processes.
