Ziel:English-Level für Internationale Mobilität zu erreichen
Course objectives
The course is intended for students with hearing impairment who want to improve their
English language skills with a focus on communication in academic environment and student
exchanges such as Erasmus+. The students will strengthen the language skills acquired in
previous English courses, improve their ability to work with academic texts in English, and
expand their vocabulary for international mobility. The presented activities are designed to
promote students’ reading comprehension, increase their vocabulary and strengthen their
grammar skills. The students will also work with transcripts (speech to text reports) of
lectures and seminars given in English and use discussion fora to practice communication
skills. The students will receive teachers’ feedback to their assignments.
Syllabus
The course is divided into seven units: five topics plus a course revision and a course
evaluation. The topics have a 'two week' format; the course revision and the evaluation are
planned to be completed in one week only.
The topics are:
● Topic 1 Know your way and meet people
● Topic 2 Understand and follow administrative instructions
● Topic 3 Search for information on a website
● Topic 4 Make notes and study based on a lecture
● Topic 5 Follow a seminar discussion and contribute to it
● Course revision
●Course evaluation
Teaching methods
The course takes place online using the e-learning environment ELF (elf.phil.muni.cz)
powered by Moodle. The students work independently in the course and must meet the
deadlines which are well-known in advance. The course comprises different kinds of texts
and videos related to university education and international mobilities. Students are also
expected to contribute regularly to the discussion fora and to submit assignments; they will
receive individualised feedback to their assignments from the teachers.
Assessment methods
There is no written exam at the end of the course. To successfully complete this course and
receive credits it is necessary to do all the obligatory assignments and tasks. Students are
allowed to leave out one topic.
The topics have a 'two week' format; the students will be required to proceed as follows:
Week 1
a) The students read the course materials and complete the tasks and assignments by
the required deadline. When completing automatically marked tasks, the students
must get at least the 60 % passing score. If not, they must do the task again.
b) The students contribute to the forum as instructed, e.g. they answer a question,
contribute to the discussion with their own materials, find appropriate additional
material online, etc. The teachers will read these materials and provide feedback.
The aim is to get the "accepted" submission status for assignments. If the submission
status reads „review and re-submit“, the students must revise the assignment based
on teachers‘ notes and comments and submit a revised version (Week 2).
Week 2
a) The students must complete the tasks and assignments by the required deadline.
b) They read their coursemates’ contributions and additional materials and react to them
as necessary.
c) They revise their assignments based on the feedback provided by the teachers and
re-submit them.
