Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

- critically investigate the implicit assumptions, values and norms of research projects

- explore the implicit patterns of meaning making that underpins research

Subject of course

Mind Scripting Workshop

Projects in Robotics and AI aim to transform human practices in crucial areas of human life. Researchers are urged to consider values such as safety, security, well-being, and privacy. However, different kinds of values and norms are at stake: epistemic values and social values, stated values or reflected values, explicit and implicit values, and often there are implicit or invisible implications of values that seem unambiguous at first. This is complicated by the fact that interdisciplinary research includes different normative frameworks and ways of thinking that need to be negotiated.

This course introduces the deconstructive method of ‘mind scripting’ to critically investigate the implicit assumptions, values and norms of student projects in the interdisciplinary doctoral college. Students will engage in a deconstruction exercise to explore the implicit patterns of meaning making that underpins their research.

The certificate of participation will be issued at the end of the PhD school. Whether it can be recognised as part of the PhD study is up to the supervisors of PhD students to decide.
