Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

According to current measures, this course will take place LIVE ON SITE.

  • run engineering codes on high-performance computers, especially at the VSC,
  • efficiently parallelize the calculations on a computing cluster, depending on the application on parallel CPUs and/or GPUs,
  • work in classical commandline style on the computing cluster, submit batch jobs und analyse them,
  • and perform the same on a virtual desktop (noMachine) with strong 3D rendering capacity, hence, which at the same time allows for powerful pre- and postprocessing,
  • to visualize their data, perhaps by means of augmented reality,
  • apply open source as well as commercial codes to selected physical or technical examples,
  • name the advantages and disadvantages of open source tools and commercial tools for selected use cases,
  • couple different simulation calculations (multi-physics coupling problems),
  • check the effects of boundary and initial conditions and also of temporal and spatial discretization on the result
  • name possibilities to estimate the stability, accuracy and convergence of a method.

Subject of course

Topics include computational fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electro magnetism, chemical reactions, structure, and acoustics. Furthermore, selected multi-physics coupling problems are mentioned. Simple problems are exemplarily treated with open source and commercial codes (hands on), such as ABAQUS, Ansys FLUENT, OpenFOAM, COMSOL, LS DYNA, or Nek5000.

Short insights into current applications from research and industry are planned.

Teaching methods

  • Lecture
  • Hands-On Exercises at the computing cluster (VSC): command line and virtual desktop for 3D Rendering
  • Short talks by scientists on selected fields planned: "insights into current applications from research and industry"
