After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

Online course: This course will take place as an online course this semester due to the restrictions of CoViD-19.

  • run engineering codes on high-performance computers, especially at the VSC, and to visualize their data,
  • apply open source as well as commercial codes to selected physical or technical examples,
  • name the advantages and disadvantages of open source tools and commercial tools for selected use cases,
  • couple different simulation calculations (multi-physics coupling problems),
  • check the effects of boundary and initial conditions and also of temporal and spatial discretization on the result 
  • name possibilities to estimate the stability, accuracy and convergence of a method,
  • efficiently parallelize the calculations on a computing cluster, depending on the application on parallel CPUs and/or GPUs

Subject of course

Topics include computational fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electro magnetism, chemical reactions, structure, and acoustics. Furthermore, selected multi-physics coupling problems are mentioned. Simple problems are exemplarily treated with open source and commercial codes (hands on), such as ABAQUS, Ansys FLUENT, OpenFOAM, COMSOL, LS DYNA, or Nek5000.

Short insights into current applications from research and industry are planned.
